Attention: www.stepinacathletics.com,

As a new member of stepinacathletics.com, I am attempting to list all of my Cross Country (X-C) and Track & Field accomplishments from the years 1963 to 1967. These awards were earned at some of the following venues: Van Cortland Park, Bronx, NY; the 168th Street Armory, New York, NY; Randall’s Island, Bronx, NY; West Point, NY; Blue Mountain, NY; Fordham University, Bronx, NY; Catholic University, Washington, D.C.; and the Penn Relays, Philadelphia, PA. Two of my former outstanding competitors were Martin Liquori, Bergen Catholic who attended Villanova University and David Pottetti, Fox Lane High School who attended Harvard University. This information is based on the physical metals and trophies that have been in storage for fifty years as a reminder of my “brilliant” Cross Country and Track & Field career.

1967 Senior Year

At the Old Madison Square Garden at 48 Street and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan, I was entered in an indoor one mile race. At the start of the race, which was run on an 11 lap track which Stepinac had an exact wooden replica, I thought that the pace was too slow so I ran to the lead for the middle part of the race. I did not realize that the Garden was indoors and that there were numerous smokers restricting the oxygen in the air. There were no laws against indoor smoking in 1967. I was also not in the best shape for this middle distance race. The rest of the field was more than happy to let me set the pace (Rabbit). At the beginning of the fourth quarter I was starting to slow dramatically as each of the other competitors started to pass me. I ended the race in last place and it took me 30 minutes to stop gasping for air and recover from the race.

The next week I handed in my Archbishop Stepinac red fleece sweat suit and made a decision to spend more time on my studies to get into a good college!

Respectfully Submitted
