Athlete(s) of the Meet(s): Final two meets

Posted Tuesday, February 22, 2011 by John Benvin

The Athletes of the meet for the Frosh/Soph Championships has come down to a few nominees. The Frosh team as a whole did extremely well despite not fielding a large team, going up against some of the best talents in the area. Matty Desjardin and Sheldon Salmon came home with medals and points for the team score after their respected open events in the Triple Jump and 55M Hurdles. Matty?s 3rd place finish with bronze, and Sheldon?s 5th place finish in the finals after narrowly qualifying 6th in the preliminaries were among the standout open events on the day. The 4x200 Relay team remained in tact and did an outstanding job as the team qualified 4th in the Trials. Coming back for the finals, the team ran around the same time as before, thus holding onto a 4th place finish, team points, and medals for all four members. Abreu, Desjardin, Salmon, and Beazer have claimed many medals in various meets running the same order. Desjardin and Salmon went home with two medals each out of possible two events allowed by league rules.

The Varsity championships were a hard fought battle; in the end it was no surprise the man to rise up and medal for the Varsity team was none other than Colin Francis. The D-II bound Francis finished 3rd in the high jump, earning the only points on the day for Stepinac. Along with jumping, Francis showcased his speed in the 55M dash. Despite finishing third, Francis barely missed qualifying as a third candidate for the CHSAA in High Jump at both States and the Indoor Nationals. However, he did qualify as an ?emerging elite? at the NB Indoor Nationals.
