Athletes of the Meet(s): NYCHSAA Sections and Counties

Posted Tuesday, February 01, 2011 by John Benvin

The NYCHSAA Sectional Championships had a strong Crusader feel to the Sunday Meet. Freshmen Joe Abreu, Sheldon Salmon, and Matty Desjardin, Senior Colin Francis, and a few good relay teams helped the Stepinac Squads finish respectively in the ultra-competitive NYCHSAA.

Despite being in the biggest, and perhaps 2nd toughest Section, the Frosh squad held their own. Abreu finished second in the 55M Dash, coasting through the trials and semis before having a strong race in the finals. Salmon also advanced to the finals, but in the 55M High Hurdles. Both sprinters gave it their all and were able to walk away with a second place finish for both, gaining 8 points in the process for the team. Desjardin would join the party, too. His PR jump, at the time of the meet, helped him earn a second place finish as well. 12 Points between the three talented freshmen gave the Stepinac team a chance to be within striking distance from the leaders of the pack. All three have bright futures, and can perhaps repeat this performance on the Varsity side within a few years.

Colin Francis helped the Varsity squad to a strong finish on Sunday as well. the jumper/sprinter stuck solely to the field events.

The Westchester County Championships was a very tough and competitive meet. With every single team located within the County lines eligible to compete, Stepinac found itself beating Powerhouse White Plains in the Overall Standings with a 10th Place finish; Yet another top 10 finish to the boys-only Catholic School.

Perhaps more importantly the team beat Special-Privliged Prep School Hackley in the Overall Standings as well. However, Hackely would get the last laugh in the Private School Division, as Hackley would finish second to the Crusaders own archrival-Iona Prep-for the Division crown. But Stepinac showed it's hunger and was competitive in both the Open Crown and the Division Crown.

Seniors Colin Francis and Tyrell "Rabbit" Goodman lead the way for the Crusader scoring. Their finishes in the Long, Triple, and High Jump lead the way for the Overall scoring to finish in the top 10. Add in the strong relays, consisting of Seniors Moriarty and Accordino, and Freshmen Desjardin and Abreu, the meet in a nutshell was amazing.
