Athletes of the Meet: Novice Champs and Hayes Invite

Posted Wednesday, January 12, 2011 by John Benvin

The Novice championships had very few glaring spots of dominance; however, the Freshmen relay team comprised of Salmon, Abreu, Desjardin, and Beazer ran their way to a second place overall finish, earning them a Silver medal.

The Hayes Invite had a very promising result for both the Current Varsity, as well as the future of the program. The Top Non Bronx Team to finish at Hayes for both Varsity and Freshemen was none other than the Stepinac Crusaders (The Bronx Championship was also held at the same time, giving the Hayes, Fordham, and Mount teams their own title). Stepinac was solid in both the field, as well as on the track.

Freshmen Joe Abreu ran all the way to a top 5 finish in the 55m dash. Senior Colin Francis also joined him. Senior Tyrell Goodman finished first in the triple jump, while Freshman Matty Desjardin finished third in the TJ, in his first ever meet trying it.

Freshmen Kieran Vaughan and Josh Beazer ran the longest races of the day; a 1600m mile and 3200m 2 mile, respectively. Beazer finished 4th behind a strong solid run, while Vaughan suprised and turned a few heads in his sub 6 minute mile.
